What are glaucoma symptoms?
In vast majority of patients with any type of glaucoma there are no symptoms till the glaucoma becomes very advanced.
People with early to moderate primary open angle glaucoma may be completely unaware of the problem. There is no pain, redness or dimness of vision. Some people may be aware of bumping in to things or notice difficulties in vision in low light.
In advanced glaucoma particularly when central vision is affected patients notice dimness and darkness of vision. Glaucoma disability varies depending on whether one or both eyes are affected and the extent and location of visual field defects.
Sight loss in glaucoma is irreversible hence it is important that glaucoma is diagnosed early through regular eye tests.
In an acute attack of angle closure the eye becomes painful, red, vision is reduced, there may be halos around light and the pupil is dilated and fixed. It is often accompanied with headache, nausea and vomiting. Thankfully this is rare.
A chronic angle closure is more common and leads to gradual painless loss of vision.
