If you have been diagnosed with the following. What does it mean?
- Ocular hypertension
- Primary open angle glaucoma
- Glaucoma suspect
- Primary angle closure / angle closure glaucoma
Ocular hypertension
In this condition eye pressure is measured more than 21mmHg but there is no other evidence of glaucoma i.e. the optic nerve, nerve fibers around it and visual fields are normal.
Ocular hypertension is a risk factor for glaucoma. The risk depends on other factors like-
Age- risk increases with increasing age.
Level of eye pressure (higher the pressure, higher the risk)
Family history of glaucoma
Thin central cornea
Level of optic disc cupping (suspicious optic disc)- higher the cupping higher the risk
Some people have thick central corneas and higher than average pressures may be normal for them.
Treatment for ocular hypertension depends on the level of IOP and the probable risk of conversion to glaucoma. Management options include observation, drops or laser to reduce the pressure.
